The Senate Appropriations Committee Tuesday unanimously approved
the higher education funding bill for fiscal year 2003. This bill is
the result of the agreement between Gov. John Engler and the public
universities that was facilitated by Grand Valley President Mark A.
Murray.
Grand Valley's appropriation will be held steady at $60.1 million, in
return for which the university must pledge a tuition
rate hikes of 8.5 percent or less. Grand Valley has already made that
promise to the state in a Feb. 14 letter from President Mark A. Murray
to the state Budget Office.
The bill will be on the Senate floor for action on Thursday and then
moves to the House of Representatives.
