GVSU & U-M launch dual degree

Grand Valley State University and The University of Michigan have signed an agreement that launches a dual bachelor of science - doctor of pharmacy degree program. The agreement was signed by Grand Valley President Mark A. Murray and University of Michigan College of Pharmacy Dean George Kenyon in a September 23 ceremony.

The signing of the dual degree agreement brings to fruition a Grand Valley presidential initiative, and culminates the year-long cooperative efforts of a group of Grand Valley and University of Michigan administrators, faculty, and staff.

The agreement establishes a dual-degree undergraduate-professional program leading to both the bachelor of science degree from Grand Valley State University and the doctor of pharmacy degree from The University of Michigan.

Under the agreement, selected Grand Valley sophomores who meet specified criteria will be granted guaranteed admission to the College of Pharmacy at The University of Michigan. After successfully completing their junior year at Grand Valley, the students will transfer to The University of Michigan College of Pharmacy, where they will begin four years of the pharmacy program. After completing the first year of pharmacy studies at The University of Michigan, the students will receive their bachelor's degree from Grand Valley. Upon completion of the remaining three years of pharmacy studies, the students will receive their doctor of pharmacy (Pharm.D.) degrees from The University of Michigan.

Initial students in this dual degree program will earn their bachelor's degrees in biomedical sciences; subsequent Grand Valley undergraduate degree options may also include degrees in chemistry and biology.

Since the majority of students accepted into the University of Michigan College of Pharmacy already have completed their baccalaureate degrees, this dual degree program with Grand Valley will save one year of undergraduate studies for the participating students. The program also establishes an important academic linkage between Grand Valley State University and The University of Michigan.
