Clifford VanMeter, professor of criminal justice, passed away on
Thursday, May 23, after a long illness. He is survived by his wife Judy
and two adult children, Tracy Schlabach and Bill VanMeter.
Dr. VanMeter was well respected for his scholarship across the United
States and in the United Kingdom. He graduated from Michigan State
University in 1959 and held a master's degree from Western Illinois
University and a doctorate from Southern Illinois University,
Carbondale. He joined Grand Valley's criminal justice faculty in 1992
after retiring from his position as professor and director of the Police
Training Institute at the University of Illinois.
His family wished everyone to know that he did not suffer long at the
end, and Judy was with him until the end. He mentioned to several GVSU
friends and colleagues that he appreciated their thoughts and prayers,
said School of Criminal Justice Director John Houston.
A Memorial Service is being held for Dr. VanMeter today, Tuesday, at 11
a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church of Grand Haven.
