Grand Valley quarterback Curt Anes is included in the balloting for the Detroit Free Press' Michigan's Best sports figure for 2001.
Anes, a junior from Kentwood, passed for 3,086 yards and 48 touchdowns and led the Lakers to a spot in the NCAA Division II playoffs before he suffered a season-ending injury. He set a record for passing efficiency and led the nation in total offense. He was a runner up for the prestigeous Harlon Hill Trophy, receiving the highest number of first place votes.
Anes is in good company on the ballot -- other sports figures included in the voting are Pistons superstar guard Jerry Stackhouse and Red Wings defenseman Nicklas Lidstrom.
Votes must be postmarked by Wednesday, and the ballots must be originals clipped from the Free Press (no photocopies). For people who are unable to pick up a copy at the newsstand, starting Monday, some ballots will available in the University Communications office, 133 Lake Michigan Hall.
Two randomly drawn entrants will win a copy of the Free Press books Century of Champions and Ernie Harwell: My Life in Baseball.
