'Sesame Street' star salutes black history

Black History Month at Grand Valley kicks off with a performance by Roscoe Orman, aka Gordon from Sesame Street. His lecture/concert, Eyes on the Prize, will highlight significant events in black history throughstory and music.

This brand-new theatrical performance celebrates African American history in a joyous and interactive format. Through songs (from artists such as Oscar Brown, Jr., Billy Taylor, Curtis Mayfield & Bill Withers) and poetry and prose (from artists and statesmen such as Maya Angelou, Ralph Ellison, Richard Wright, Margaret Walker, William Wells Brown and Amiri Baraka), Orman journeys through some of the most pivotal, controversial and defining moments in African-American history.

The performance is Friday, February 1, at 9 p.m., Kirkhof Center's Grand River Room.

Grand Valley has numerous other events planned to celebrate Black History Month. Most events are at the Allendale Campus. For details, call the Multicultural Affairs Office at 616-895-2177.
