U.S. Rep. Peter Hoekstra was on hand Monday as Grand Valley begins construction on a sea wall at its Lake Michigan Center.
The construction of the wall will eliminate serious erosion at the center, which is home to Grand Valley's Annis Water Resources Institute.
The first barge for the project arrived Monday morning as workers began site work on the project, which should last two-and-a-half months. Great Lakes Marine in Muskegon is the contractor.
Hoekstra (R-Holland) helped secure $1 million in federal funding for the construction of the sea wall. He has also been instrumental in helping protect the Great Lakes as a natural resource. He has introduced legislation (H.R. 1680) that will battle aquatic nuisance species in the Great Lakes. That bill is currently in committee.
