The Black Student Union features special guest Judge Greg Mathis in a presentation at 7 p.m. tonight in downtown Grand Rapids. It is open to the public free of charge.
Mathis' presentation, From Gang to Gavel, focuses on his life -- a rags-to-riches story. As a teenager, he dropped out of school, joined the notorious Errol Flynn gang in Detroit and did time in jail. After his mother's death inspired him to turn his life around, he attended college, got a law degree and in 1995 became the youngest judge in Michigan history. He now hosts his own television program, Judge Greg Mathis, airing locally on WOOD-TV 8 at 10 a.m. weekday mornings.
Inner City Miracle, a musical written about his life, opened in 1997.
Mathis will speak at 7 p.m. in the Loosemore Auditorium in the DeVos Center, GVSU Pew Grand Rapids Campus, 401 W. Fulton St.
