International appointment

A Morehouse College professor has been named the new dean of international education at Grand Valley State University.

George Kieh Jr. will begin his new duties at GVSU on August 1. Kieh is a professor of political science and international studies at Morehouse, a historically black college for men in Atlanta, Georgia.

Kieh has an extensive background in international education. In 1997, he assumed duties as director of the Conflict and Development Studies Project at Morehouse. He was named founding director of the college's Center for International Studies in 1993. Prior to his positions at Morehouse, Kieh worked in international studies departments at Illinois Wesleyan University and the University of Memphis.

A native of Liberia, Africa, Kieh received a bachelor's degree in political science from the University of Liberia, and master's and doctorate degrees in political science from Northwestern University.

He is an active researcher and is co-directing two Ford Foundation grants, totaling nearly $1 million, related to military and government presences in Africa. Kieh has published two books and has four others forthcoming, all centered on African studies.

The Padnos International Center coordinates study abroad programs to more than 20 countries; develops partnerships with international universities; and works within GVSU's departments to develop strong international programs.
