Beckering series continues

The inaugural Beckering Family Carillon International Concert Series continues this week as John Widmann, city carillonneur of Frederick, Maryland performs Thursday, July 12 at noon.

New this year, the university is introducing to the public the Beckering Family Carillon, located on the Pew Grand Rapids Campus, with its own series of concerts.

The Beckering Family Carillon was dedicated just last fall and its tower has become the landmark structure -- both in sight and sound -- of the new Pew Campus, located off Fulton Street. The instrument's 48 bells, housed in the striking 151-foot tower, can be heard throughout downtown Grand Rapids.

A special feature this year is the opportunity for audiences to see as well as hear the carillonneurs perform. Video cameras mounted in the tower's playing chamberwill transmit live images to large monitors located at the base of the tower.

Concerts typically run 45-60 minutes. Audience members are urged to bring lawn chairs or blankets for seating, and to move about the campus. Frisbees and bikes are welcome.
