ENG 603: Seminar in British Literature

T 6-8:50 p.m. Eberhard Center

ENG 603

Dr. Kathleen Blumreich

English 603 offers “intensive study of a period of British, American, or world literature.”  This semester, we will read and discuss poetry by Donne and others of the so-called ‘Metaphysical School.’ Our purpose will be fourfold: to explore this sub-genre with particular attention to its characteristic features (e.g., ‘wit,’ ‘conceits,’ ‘strong’ lines); to ascertain why the metaphysical style emerged as it did, when it did; to consider the  critical reception of this species of poetry; and to gain better understanding of why these works are still worth studying. Of course, it goes without saying that an overarching goal will be to enjoy discussing literature in an academic environment where all questions, issues, and views are welcome.
