Despite heavy censorship, Iranian filmmakers have created layered and complex films about women. Join us for a weekly series to watch and discuss some of these films. Presented by the Grand Valley State Women in Cinema Club and the Department of Visual and Media Arts.

This is a four-part series includes the following films: 

March 26: Two Women (1999, Tahmineh Milani)

This feminist classsic follows the vastly different paths of two promising architecture students, Fereshteh and Roy, over the first turbulent years of the Islamic Republic.

April 2: Selection of short films by Iranian women filmmakers

This selection of uncensored films tackles pressing national and international political issues through the creative lens of Iranian women. filmmakers.

April 9: A Separation (2011, Asghar Farhadi)

When Nader, a bank employee, refuses to leave Tehran to care for his father with Alzeimers, his wife, Simin, sues for divorce in the hope that she can make a better life for their young daughter abroad. Morally complex and suspenseful, A Separation explores class and the expectations placed upon women within an aging patriarchy.

April 16: Leila’s Brothers (2022, Saeed Roustayi)

At the age of 40, Leila has spent her entire life caring for her parents and four brothers in a family that is constantly arguing and under pressure from various debts in the face of sanctions against Iran. In this skillfully crafted film, the current political climate of Iran is filtered through a family drama.
