Abstract : The past two decades have seen a steady increase in attention to the relationship between technologies and mental health. While much of the focus has been on the negative outcomes of digital culture, the internet is also a key, and sometimes the only, resource for people first experiencing mental health symptoms. Moreover, in-person treatment is often inaccessible or impractical due to financial barriers and provider shortages. These realities demand alternative treatment models and methods of intervention informed by existing online help-seeking processes. Digital interventions deployed via both web-based and mobile devices can reach diverse populations that may not otherwise have access to, or are not yet engaged in, traditional mental health treatment. In this talk, I will discuss the role of digital intervention in addressing the mental health crisis, including opportunities and challenges on the horizon.

The talk will be given by Dr. Kaylee Kruzan.  Dr. Kruzan is a Research Assistant Professor in the Department of Preventive Medicine and the Center for Behavioral Intervention Technologies in Northwestern University's Feinberg School of Medicine. Her research program is focused on the design, evaluation, and implementation of scalable digital mental health interventions for self-injurious thoughts and behaviors in adolescents and young adults. She employs user-centered design methodologies to partner with young people, understand their mental health needs, and create digital resources primarily for those not yet engaged in formal treatment. Dr. Kruzan earned her doctorate in Communication from Cornell University, Master of Social Work from The Ohio State University, MA in Communication from University of Illinois at Chicago and BS/BA in Psychology and Communication Studies from Grand Valley State University. Outside of research, Kaylee is a therapist at a group practice in Chicago, Illinois.
