La Tertulia offers students the opportunity to delve deeper into Hispanic and Latino cultures in an environment outside of the classroom. It is our goal to provide a safe environment to practice Spanish, learn about the cultures of Spanish speaking areas, and build relationships with fellow members from many different countries and backgrounds. We do this throughout the year by offering opportunities for students to:

  • Try new foods and products native to different countries and cultures
  • Take trips to museums, restaurants, and other cultural events
  • Immerse themselves in the arts, including dance and song, native to different countries and cultures
  • Make connections with international students from many different Spanish speaking countries
  • Volunteer with local hispanic and latino organizations to give back to the community

Our student organization strives to educate and inform the student community of Grand Valley State University about Francophone culture from around the world. Through our cultural events as well as those of the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures, such as the Tournées Film Festival, Mélodies: An evening of French Song, Music and Poetry, the annual Fête de la Francophonie, baking and cooking workshops and many other fun activities, we hope to spread not only our knowledge of the importance of the cultures from around the French-speaking world, but also all the reasons why we love it so much. Our club is open to all, from those who simply wish to travel to Paris one day to others who are actual French citizens "de souche". Please take note that members DO NOT need to speak French. However, some cultural activities will inevitably be conducted in French.
