The recent U.S. election has increased our awareness of disinformation spread through social media. But this is not only a problem in the U.S. The pernicious effects of the disinformation plague is undermining elections, exacerbated the pandemic, stoking ethnic hatreds and spawned acts of violence in many parts of the world. We need to deepen our understanding of disinformation and its challenge to the democratic process.
