About MCL

Mekik Climatology Lab Est. 1999

The Mekik Climatology Lab (MCL) grew into a hub of climate related scientific research, student-scholar led scientific investigations, and education about climate science, paleoclimatology, and paleoceanography in over two decades.

The principle investigator of the lab is Dr. Figen Mekik who has advised and collaborated with over 30 undergraduate student scholars and numerous professional oceanographers and climate scientists in this time.

MCL is a vibrant place of scientific investigation and learning for the scientifically minded and curious.

Check out the work of our current and alumni student scholars, the projects in our lab, videos and tutorials on climate science, and feel free to reach out to us with questions, ideas, and comments about current climate events.

* Our logo was skillfully created by our GVSU Geology alumna Lauren Chan in 2023.

** In loving memory of Murat Cem Mekik who inspired his family and many friends to pursue science and to think critically and scientifically. He is the inspiraton behind his sister's (Figen) career in science and for developing a climatology lab. He had a keen understanding of space exploration, and his many skills and hobbies included photography, music, and an acute interest in social justice.
