Description

Friends of Alten members are invited to join us for Mathias Alten: A Giant Among Us.

This special conversation will feature local tour guide Caroline Cook, who will share
insights into the art and daily life of Mathias Alten. During the reception, guests are
invited to explore the Gordon Galleries and enjoy time together in celebration of
Alten’s enduring legacy.

It is nearly impossible to enter a prominent building in downtown Grand Rapids
without encountering one of Alten’s paintings. His work continues to enrich the
city’s public spaces — from the Grand Rapids Public Library and the St. Cecilia Music
Center to historic churches, hospitals, universities, and galleries. A world-renowned
master who made his home in Grand Rapids, Alten remains a defining presence in
the cultural life of our community.

The evening will conclude with a heartfelt celebration of life honoring our dear
friend and supporter, Barbara Gordon (1934–2026).
