Photos of Elmina Castle in Elmina, Ghana, formerly known as the Gold Coast.
These two photos, "Fortress El Mina" and "El Mina Castle as in the old days" document Prof Tucker's travel to Cape Coast, Ghana to experience first-hand the site where Africans were transformed into cargo and shipped to the western hemisphere to be used as slaves. Experiencing the slave castles in West Africa enables Prof. Tucker to teach students in the African American Studies program at Grand Valley very intimately about the slave trade and what led to some of the African presence in the Western world, particularly in North America.
