Welcome to the Writing Department homepage. We are one of only a handful of independent writing programs in the nation, which allows our program to offer our students unique opportunities to shape their education. Whether you are interested in creative writing, web writing, document design, or business communication, you will be able to choose courses that correspond to your professional aspirations and to the skills you wish to develop. With a degree in writing, you can become a web writer, freelancer, document designer, magazine writer, editor, publisher, or technical writer, to name a few.
The Writing Department curriculum offers unique opportunities for students to shape the B.A. or B.S. 42-credit degree in writing. In choosing this major, students will also have the chance to enhance their classroom writing experiences with an internship. As a department, we take job preparation seriously. By completing an internship as part of their coursework, students will gain professional experience before graduating and will be better prepared for the demands of the 21st century workplace.
Besides choosing from a variety of courses, students will also be able to participate in many extracurricular activities and practice their writing skills outside of the classroom. These activities range from a vibrant student reading series, the Grand Valley Writers Series, a student-run literary journal, a bi-annual student-written department newsletter, to clubs and organizations dedicated exclusively to writing. Finally, our Distinction in Writing program encourages students to pursue extracurricular activities to set themselves apart as writers and young professionals.
More details on all of these extracurricular opportunities, as well as major/minor requirements, course descriptions, faculty profiles, and internship information can be found in the top left links. Please contact us if we can assist in any way!
