5) Do you have assignments/projects to work on during Christmas vacation and Spring Break, or do you get a real vacation?
Mike Brossman, Class of 2006
Yes, there is always reviewing and catching up on some concepts, over my breaks.
Nichole Maxa, Class of 2006
During Chrismas break we had to read a book for 2nd semester and get tested on it, but there was never a test. I think they just didn't want us to really have a break! Other than that, nothing. We deserve breaks during our breaks!
Joy Powell, Class of 2005
We have breaks? (Realistically, yes. Our profs expect us to be current in readings before a semester starts. Also we do a fair bit of reviewing/preparing on our own...not really assignments though, I guess. Of course, during the summer we are expected to be working on our research. As they say, "no rest for the wicked!")
Heather Sawdy, Class of 2005
Yes and it is not unheard of to have quizzes/tests over that material your first day back from break either. I have had assignments over Christmas break as well as plenty of work to do over every spring break and thanksgiving break since entering graduate school.
Deanna Bondie, Class of 2004
No more real vacations, sorry to say. We had to read a book over Christmas break, it wasn't bad, but the idea of having to read over vacation was a little daunting. The homework you get over breaks is not large, but there are a few assignments to do.
Michelle Kreusel, Class of 2004
Yes, much to all of the first years' dismay, we did receive an assignment over Christmas break to read a book. Was it horrible? No. Was it a fun book to read? Not exactly. Am I glad I was assigned to read it over break instead of during the next semester? You betcha.
Susan Stevens, Class of 2003
During breaks between semesters, you are able to take a real vacation if you want. For breaks during the semester (spring break or Thanksgiving), it depends on how well you've planned your semester up until that point...if you put something off, you'll be working on it during break!
Lindsay Williams, Class of 2003
Once you begin work on your Master's research, that can take up all of your free time. You can choose how to spend your breaks, but if you want to make your last semester in the program less stressful, you'll budget time during your breaks to meet little goals you've set for the project. Everyone will do it differently though. You'll know when you need a break and you'll take it...you'll deserve it. You'll also know when you need to get down to business.
Michelle Vander Heide, Class of 2002
Christmas vacation is usually fairly open because you have just finished up a semester. However, spring break can be a different story. If you plan ahead and really work hard you can take that time off completely but in reality there will always be some things that you could do over spring break. I use it as a good time to catch up on past assignments and try to get ahead for the rest of the semester. But you may just need a break and with good time management and planning you can do that.
