Requirements for the Psychology/Special Education Major:

A Psychology-Special Education major is offered through the cooperation of the Psychology Department and the College of Education for those students who are preparing for a teaching career in special education. Because of the complexity of the program, students are advised to declare their major early and consult with their advisors regularly.

The required 33 to 36 hours of courses for the major are:
PSY 301, 302, 304, 324, 325, and one of the following: PSY 331, 357, 365, 368, 431, 452, or 490, as well as ED 332, 361, 495, and a choice of: 496 or 497 or 498 depending on desired endorsements.

See the College of Education regarding available endorsement options.

Students must complete all of the required courses in General Education, the required courses in the Elementary Education minor (except ED 320 and ED 360) and all the required Psychology courses (including PSY 310 and/;or 326, which are required for endorsement but are not part of the major) by the time they enter the College of Education.  Students should apply to the College of Education by February 1st for fall admission.

Students may earn either a B.A. or B.S. degree. The B.A. degree requires third-semester proficiency in a foreign language. The B.S. degree cognate sequence is: STA 215, PSY 300, and ED 495.

The Psychology-Special Education major is only part of what is required for teacher certification.  Other requirements are described in the Education section: Elementary Teacher Certification (Special Education Endorsement).
