Medical Laboratory Science Program Application Information


APPLICATION MATERIALS AND SUBMISSION INFORMATION

Medical laboratory scientists (AKA medical technologists) perform complex analyses in order to formulate data on blood, tissues, and fluids of the human body that may be used by a physician or clinician to determine the presence, extent, or cause of disease. These laboratory tests play an important role in the detection, diagnosis, and treatment of many diseases. Medical laboratory scientists work in conjunction with pathologists, physicians, and other health care team professionals. Secondary application and admission are required.

The Medical Laboratory Science program application consists of the following components, all of which should be completed and submitted by March 15, prior to the intended winter semester entryApplications will continue to be accepted on a rolling basis until all seats are filled.  Application review will begin immediately following the application deadline, and all qualified applicants will be invited to meet with the MLS faculty.

Application Materials Checklist:

  • GVSU Admissions Undergraduate Application (only required for students who are not currently a GVSU student).  Students must be admitted to Grand Valley State University prior to the program application deadline.
  • MLS Secondary Program Application (see blue button above) -  Please Note: Plan to fully complete and submit this online application in one sitting as it cannot be saved to return to later.
  • Minimum cumulative and science GPA of 2.8
  • Resume (attach to application)
  • Statement of Professional Philosophy (1-2 pages) - Why have you chosen MLS as a profession? (attach to application)
  • Verification of Course Completion form * (see link above; attach to application)
  • Two electronic recommendations are required:
    • Applicant will provide the full name and email address for their two recommenders in the application.
    • The College of Health Professions Student Services (CHPSS) office will send the "Recommender" a link to our electronic recommendation form. Once the "Recommender" completes the form, the CHPSS office will upload the recommendation to the applicant's file.
    • The recommendation link cannot be sent out until after we receive this completed application, therefore you are encouraged to submit your application no later than two weeks before the March 15th application deadline. 
    • All electronic recommendation responses are due before the March 15th application deadline.
    • It is your responsibility and a professional courtesy to notify your "Recommender" in advance that they will be receiving a link from our office and to respond promptly.

  • Official and updated copies of ALL non-GVSU transcripts need to be sent directly to the GVSU Admissions Office at:

  • For those applicants not currently enrolled at GVSU or have not yet taken GVSU classes, you should meet with a CHP academic advisor as soon as possible to review your transfer course equivalencies and program eligibility.  Go to our CHP Student Services Office website or call our office at (616) 331-5900 to set up a prospective student advising appointment.

Admission Considerations

Admission consideration will be based on the following:
1) Academic record including science and overall grade-point averages (GPA's)
2) Faculty meeting/interview
3) Laboratory science exposure
4) Philosophy composition

 

* Prerequisite Courses:  The GVSU Medical Laboratory Science program requires all prerequisite courses to be completed with LETTER (A, B, C) or NUMERICAL (4.0, 3.0, 2.0)  grades.  Prerequisite courses completed with Pass/Fail or Credit/No credit will not fulfill the program’s admissions requirements.

The College of Health Professions (CHP) Student Services Office (SSO) in collaboration with CHP faculty and staff provides academic advising, admissions, and other student services to future and current undergraduate and graduate students in support of their academic, professional and personal development on the campus and within the greater community.

Students should plan on additional cost for travel expenses to clinical placements which can be up to three hours from Grand Rapids.
