Message Regarding Violence in Monterey Park, CA

January 22, 2023

Dear Faculty, Staff, and Students,

We are deeply saddened to learn of the shooting in Monterey Park, California, on Chinese New Year. This is a time when we should be celebrating renewal and joy, but instead, we are mourning the loss of innocent lives. Our hearts go out to the victims and their families, and we send our deepest sympathies to all those impacted. This senseless act of violence has no place in our society. We stand in solidarity with the Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) community during this difficult time.

We understand some may be experiencing fear and anxiety, and we want you to know that we are here to support you. We are committed to providing a safe and supportive environment for all our community members. The University Counseling Center is available for appointments online, or by phone (616) 331-3266, for students. The Employee Assistance Program, Encompass, is available to help with confidential and professional mental health resources for employees and family members, and you can connect with colleagues through the Asian Faculty/Staff Association. Please do not hesitate to reach out – whether it’s just for someone to talk to or something more.

The entire AAPI community is in our thoughts.

Very sincerely,

Jesse
