FILM & VIDEO PRODUCTION MAJOR ADMISSION POLICY

OVERVIEW
Students interested in the Film and  Video Production Major are urged to complete the "Declaration of Major" form promptly upon admission to GVSU (do not wait for secondary admission to the Film/Video major) and to maintain regular contact with their advisor to ensure proper course enrollment and steady progress toward full acceptance.

In order to maintain high-quality instruction, the Film and Video Production Major limits the number of students accepted each year into CFV 226 and all 300- and 400- level film/video courses.

Students are required to have an overall grade point average above 2.5 and complete the three Film/Video pre-admission courses (CFV 123, 124, and 125) with a minimum of 3.0 GPA in order to apply for admission.

Keep in mind that your entire application package, as well as your overall performance in class, is considered at the time of application.  Simply meeting the required GPA's does not guarantee admission into the GVSU Film/Video Major.

The following required pre-admission courses may be taken in any order.

Pre-admission courses:

CFV 123 Survey of Media Production Modes (replaced CFV 170)

CFV 124 Image and Sound

CFV 125 Media Production I

Having met these requirements, students will submit an admissions application. All prospective majors must submit an admission application packet.

PETITION TO SUBSTITUTE PRE-ADMISSION COURSES
Students may petition to substitute one or more of the three pre-admission courses on the basis of course work completed at a post-secondary institution for which they have received a GPA above 3.0. High school training or other non-college training will not be considered the equivalent of course work at GVSU.

The petition process takes approximately two weeks and must be completed prior to application to the major. If your petition is accepted, you must include a copy of your confirmation letter in your application to the major.

This petition must include:

  • A transcript from the institution where the course was offered.
  • A syllabus which includes a detailed description of the course content.
  • Projects, exams, and/or papers from the relevant course.

Submit these materials to the School of Communications office. Film/Video faculty will evaluate the materials to determine whether the course is equivalent to the pre-admission course at GVSU.
