Words of Wisdom: Networking with people, attending organizations of your chosen field and putting stuff in festivals IS worth the effort. You have to get your name out there and sell yourself, even if you don't think you're good enough.

Information:

Right after graduation, I became a Video Production Assistant at CNN Headline News in Atlanta, Georgia.  Coming from such an encouraging environment such as WGVU-TV, I soon realized that this was a place I didn’t want to be in and couldn’t see myself in long term.  I moved back to Michigan with hopes of getting into the local TV news industry but what I thought would help me, seemed to somewhat over qualify me. I eventually stumbled into law enforcement as a hobby and found myself intrigued with it, especially 911.  I started as a 911 Dispatcher at the Berrien County Sheriff’s Department in 1995 and am now a Supervisor and 800 MHz radio instructor.  Although I’m not doing video work full time, I’ve actually found a great outlet to still pursue this passion by working with various non-profit groups providing videography on historical topics.

Words of Wisdom: Thoroughly check out potential jobs that you accept and don’t be “blinded” by Hollywood or CNN or any big name either.  Don’t be afraid to go into other areas that may still utilize your skills and talents.  I ended up thinking I was going to work on documentaries or news and instead I’m making the news!   Just find something you love to do and be passionate about it!  Best of luck to you!
