GVSU addresses teacher shortages through partnerships

Dr. Paula Lancaster, Professor of Special Education in Teaching and Learning, was recently featured on WZZM 13's article/video on the Michigan teacher shortage. The story focuses on how Michigan lakeshore school districts are particularly challenged by the state teacher shortage and spotlights how GVSU collaborates with school districts.

GVSU’s College of Education is addressing the teacher shortage in 2019-2020 by working closely with Michigan school districts to support teacher development. This includes key partnerships with three school districts:

  • The Battle Creek Public Schools and the W.K. Kellogg Foundation partnership provides new teacher mentoring options and professional development to Battle Creek teachers. As part of this program, GVSU’s Battle Creek Student Teacher program provides GVSU student teachers with full tuition during student teaching as well as stipends towards cost of living and textbooks.
  • GVSU’s Detroit Charter Schools Student Teacher Scholarship program continues to provide financial support to Detroit student teachers. GVSU student teachers receive full tuition during student teaching while working in a GVSU Detroit Charter School.
  • Muskegon Heights Public School Academy System collaborated with GVSU to create the Supporting Emerging Educator Development (SEED) program. This innovative teaching program provides 15 Muskegon Heights staff members with an intensive teacher residency program. While working fulltime in district classrooms, the new educators will receive evening and online teacher education classes from GVSU. This innovative new program was approved by the Michigan Department of Education.
