The New Orleans Symposium (Day 2) Trauma and Service Learning

Date and Time

Friday, January 16, 2015 11:00 AM - 12:00 PM

Description

11:00am-12:00pm -

The Trauma of Family Disbursement, Dianne Green-Smith - Although I was not in the midst of the battle, I experienced trauma.  It is called, secondary trauma.  My entire family was disbursed - sent in different directions on Interstate-10. My father, a 79 year old man, became impatient with a 20 minute drive that took four hours. He got out  of the car that was headed towards the airport, jumped into another car that transported him back to his home.  There, he sat on the porch, ate some food, and watched his neighbors evacuate.  My presentation will highlight my experience as an insider/outsider whose family lived through the trauma of Katrina, refugees in their own home.

Service Learning in New Orleans Student Panel, Steven Smith and Dave Gabrielse - Current Social Work professor, Steven Smith, along with retired professor, Dave Gabrielse, have taken students on service learning trips to New Orleans for several years. This student panel will consist of students from the most recent service learning trip to New Orleans, which took place in December of 2014.  Students will share their experiences and discuss their ideas about the city, Hurricane Katrina, the aftermath, and more.
