Doug and Linda Woods Excellence in Athletic Training Scholarship

Doug and Linda Woods have served the students of Grand Valley State University for over thirty years. For the majority of the time, Doug provided health care to the student-athletes as the athletic department’s Head Athletic Trainer. In 1978 Doug developed a curriculum for educating athletic training students. For eighteen years, Doug was the GVSU softball coach until his retirement in 2014. Linda has provided educational support to the students through her work as a reference librarian at the Zumberge Library. 

In honor of Doug and Linda, the Woods Scholarships are awarded to the athletic training students in appreciation of their academic success and dedication to Grand Valley’s athletic training department. Two, four thousand dollar scholarships are granted to the successful applicants. Eligibility for the Woods scholarships requires an athletic training student to:

• Have a minimum cumulative 3.0 GPA
• Be in good standing in Grand Valley’s CAATE accredited Athletic Training Program
• Have at least one semester of clinical experience remaining in the program
• Demonstrate commitment to the athletic training profession

Athletic Training Award of Excellence Scholarship

Iota Tau Alpha is an Athletic Training Education Honor Society.  About 14 years ago, GVSU created a chapter whose faculty advisor is Dr. Brian Hatzel.  Over those years, students have raised over $30,000.  In 2019, the members of Iota Tau Alpha have decided to turn those funds into a scholarship titled the Athletic Training Student Excellence Scholarship. This scholarship's purpose is to support a student in the Master of Athletic Training Program who has excelled in the academic, clinical, and leadership aspects of the program and plans to pursue a career in athletic training.

The purpose of this scholarship is to recognize a current student in good standing in the Masters of Athletic Training (MAT) degree program who has excelled in the academic, clinical, and leadership aspects of the MAT, and plans to pursue a career in athletic training. To be eligible, students must:

• Be admitted to the Master of Athletic Training (MAT) program at GVSU
• Have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or greater
• Have completed two semesters of coursework with the MAT program
• Have at least one semester remaining in the MAT program

This scholarship may not be renewed.

The Todd Jager Memorial Graduate Athletic Training Award

To honor the memory of Todd Jager, Grand Valley’s Head Athletic Trainer for 10 years, family and friends have created the Todd Jager Memorial Graduate Athletic Training Student Award Endowment fund. It was created in the spring of 2008 to assist graduate students pursuing a career in college athletic training. Todd spent his college and professional years in college athletics and recognized the significant dedication and determination involved to pursue this profession. It is fitting that Todd’s battle with brain cancer required similar dedication and determination to continue to do what he loved, which was to provide medical care for college athletes.

This scholarship will provide financial support to outstanding graduate students working as a graduate assistants in Grand Valley State University’s Intercollegiate Athletic Department who demonstrate the values, character, and perseverance that Todd worked so hard to embody. The recipient will have a Bachelor of Science in Athletic Training or a similar major and be pursuing an athletic training career in college athletics, with preference given to students with involvement in campus ministry.

Dan Chappell '85 Athletic Training Memorial Scholarship

The purpose of this scholarship is to assist a student with their Masters of Athletic Training.

To qualify students must:

• be accepted for or currently enrolled at Grand Valley State University (GVSU)
• be a graduate student enrolled in the Masters of Athletic Training program
• be meeting satisfactory academic progress (https://www.gvsu.edu/financialaid/satisfactory-academic-progress-sap-17.htm)
• Financial need is required and will be demonstrated by the completion of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

This scholarship may be renewed with reapplication.

Boand & Rowe Scholarship for Advancement of Women in Sport & Physical Activity

This scholarship was established to assist current GVSU undergraduate or graduate students for their leadership or involvement in activities to advance women in leadership in sport and physical activity.

• Must be an undergraduate or graduate student
• Must be full-time student
• Undergraduate applicants must have completed at least 55 credits
• Must have a 2.5 cumulative GPA
• Must be meeting satisfactory academic progress
• Preference is given to those applicants who demonstrate an interest or career goals related to the advancement of women in leadership in sport and physical activity.
• Financial need is not required but may be considered by completion of the FAFSA

Dr. Alvin & Monica Saake Foundation Fund

This scholarship is named for Dr. Alvin Saake, a former coach of the University of Hawai'i basketball team in the 1950's and 60's who passed away in 2003. His commitment to higher education lives on in this scholarship. Recipients are chosen for your interest in the fields of Kinesiology, Sports Medicine, Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Leisure Science, or other related fields.

Requirements:

• Be a college junior, senior, or graduate student.
• Major in Kinesiology, Leisure Science, Physical Education, Athletic Training, Exercise Science, Sports Medicine, Physical Therapy or Occupational Therapy.
• Be a resident of the State of Hawaii.
• Demonstrate financial need.
• Attend an accredited two or four-year college or university.
• Be a full-time student.
• Maintain a minimum 2.7 GPA.

MATS Scholarship

MATS offers a student scholarship annually to a currently enrolled full-time student in a Michigan College/University entry-level athletic training program with the intention of becoming a BOC Certified Athletic Trainer. Applicant must be a current member of the Michigan Athletic Trainers Society (will be verified), have at least one year remaining of entry-level athletic training education and must have grade point average (GPA) of 3.2 (based on a 4.0 scale) for ALL entry-level education courses to date.  All sections of the application packet must be fully completed as directed.  All information in the application packet must be typed.  A fully completed application packet must be e-mailed to Eliza MacDonald, MPA, AT, ATC no later than 5:00 p.m. March 31 of each year at [email protected]. Please e-mail the application as one document.

NATA Foundation Scholarship Program

The NATA Foundation Scholarship Program is one of the organization’s most highly regarded programs. Through this program, which is managed by the Scholarship Committee, the NATA Foundation awards undergraduate, master’s and doctoral scholarships. The number of scholarship varies annually. Scholarship funding is secured through a variety of sources, including the organization’s endowment program, as well as through corporate and individual support.

Requirements:

• Be enrolled in a CAATE accredited entry-level master’s program that concludes with a master’s degree
• Have a cumulative overall GPA of at least 3.2 (based on a 4.0 maximum)
• Plan on pursuing a career as a certified athletic trainer

PFATS Athletic Training Student Scholarships

As part of its commitment to advance the athletic training profession, PFATS allocates funding, resources and voluntary efforts toward special programs and services of its members to a variety of NATA programs and services.  PFATS currently awards four $2,000 scholarships for athletic training students annually at the NATA's William E. Newell Student Athletic Trainer Awards Luncheon. The first PFATS Scholarships was established in 1983. There are eight PFATS available: Dean Kleinschmidt Scholarship, William Tessendorf Scholarship, Edward Block Scholarship, Larry "Stosh" Neumann Undergraduate Scholarship, Jerry Rhea Scholarship, John Norwig Scholarship, Robert H. “Bobby” Gunn Scholarship, and Steve “Greek” Antonopulos Scholarship.

Requirements:

• Be enrolled in a CAATE accredited entry-level master’s program that concludes with a master’s degree
• Have a cumulative overall GPA of at least 3.2 (based on a 4.0 maximum)

Athletic Training Student Minority Scholarship

PFATS and NFL Charities Minority Scholarships

Since 1993, PFATS and NFL Charities have worked together to sponsor annual scholarships for ethnic minority students. The scholarship program is open to undergraduate and graduate ethnic minority athletic training students who possess a cumulative grade-point average of at least 2.5 on a four-point scale. In addition to receiving a financial grant, each student selected will have the opportunity to work at an NFL summer training camp.

CATS Family Scholarship

In 2003, the College Athletic Trainers Society (CATS) created the CATS Family Scholarship. The scholarship is rewarded to the son or daughter of a CATS member. Four scholarships, each in the amount of $2,000 for one academic year are awarded to qualifying applicants enrolled full-time at a college or university for the upcoming year. Academic achievements, awards, activities, volunteer work, letters of recommendation and an essay are reviewed.

Tylenol Scholarship Program

The makers of TYLENOL® are proud to support the future of healthcare with our annual TYLENOL® Scholarship program. Now in its 18th year, the program helps students who are pursuing careers in the medical field manage the rising costs of education. This year, we're proud to award $5,000 and $10,000 scholarships (totaling $250,000) to forty outstanding students based on leadership qualities and academic performance.

The Chuck Kimmel First-Time NATA Attendee Award

The purpose of the Chuck Kimmel First-Time Attendee Award is to honor the outstanding man and athletic trainer that is Chuck Kimmel. Mr. Kimmel has provided students with opportunity throughout his career as an educator, head athletic trainer and NATA president. As an extension of respect and gratitude, SLC offers the Chuck Kimmel First-Time Attendee Award to help more students attend the NATA Clinical Symposia & AT Expo. 

The expectation of this award is to assist athletic training students who have never attended the annual NATA convention. This award will provide a total of $2,000 in award money to as many as four athletic training students, who have never attended the annual NATA Clinical Symposia & AT Expo. Chuck Kimmel First-Time Attendee Award applications will be accepted between February 15 and April 20. 

To qualify applicants must:

• The applicant must be self-nominated.
• Applicant must be enrolled in a CAATE accredited professional program and ineligible to sit for the BOC exam.
• Applicant must have an NPI number by the application deadline (included on the application) unless an international student in which case this will be waived.
• Applicant must be a first-time attendee to the NATA convention. This includes no participation in a previous in-person or virtual NATA Clinical Symposia & AT Expo.
• Must currently be enrolled in a CAATE accredited athletic training program and in good standing within their athletic training program.
• Application materials must be completed entirely. Incomplete applications will not continue through the selection process. 
• Application materials submitted after the deadline will not be accepted. The application deadline is 11:59 p.m. CST April 20, 2024.
• Applicant must be an NATA member in good standing at least two months prior to the award deadline.
• Recipients will be selected by SLC and notified by the NATA SLC Outreach chair by May 1 of the deadline year.
