What You Need to Know About Homecoming 2017

Posted on October 17, 2017

Just like in high school - Homecoming is an exciting week of events. Do you have Laker spirit? Come to any of the events being sponsored all week long and share it. Do you want to watch teams compete and earn points? Come to the glow-in-the-dark dodgeball tournament on Sunday night in the Rec Center. Do you liked haunted houses? Join us in the Kirkhof Center on Wednesday night for the Haunted House Competition. Do you enjoy music? Come to the Fieldhouse on Friday night for our annual Lip Sync performance. Homecoming is a great fall tradition and a fun way to learn more about your campus and get connected. There is something for everyone!

So what is Homecoming exactly?

Here at the Valley, Homecoming is a week-long competition between different organizations. Anyone is welcome to form a team, whether it’s your housing association, intramural sports team, sorority or fraternity, club, or just a group of friends in the same major. You do not have to be on a team to enjoy Homecoming - anyone can join in on the fun.

What if my organization isn’t big enough?

No such thing! Homecoming teams will be broken into two tiers based on size and will only be competing against teams in their own tier. So whether your team is 10 people or 100 people, you will still have a chance to win!

What are some of the events teams participate in?

While the entire schedule for the week can be found on the Student Life website, some of our events include a glow-in-the-dark dodgeball tournament, a game show, a haunted house, sculpt-it, and a Lip Sync battle! Students can join in most of the activities even if they’re not part of a team.

Is there a Homecoming court?

Yes, there is! Members of student organizations participating in Homecoming are eligible to be nominated for Homecoming regent. Regents are juniors or seniors at Grand Valley, are in good academic standing at the university, and embody Grand Valley values in their everyday lives. Nominations have closed, but make sure you come to Regent Reveal on Monday, October 23 at 9:15 p.m. in KC 2250 (upstairs in the Kirkhof Center.) You can also vote for your favorite Laker online starting on Tuesday.

Should I attend the Homecoming football game?

Absolutely students should attend the football game! Watch the Lakers take on the Northern Wildcats and be one of the first 1,000 students to enter to get a free blanket sponsored by Copper Beech Apartments. Nothing says fall like football, the Laker Marching Band, and midterms being finished.
