Let Volunteering Open the Door to Opportunity

Posted on January 30, 2018

The Community Service Learning Center (CSLC) is inviting you to their biannual Nonprofit Volunteer & Internship Fair on January from 1-3 p.m. in the Loosemore Forum on our Pew Campus. If you’re looking for volunteer and internship opportunities, this is an event you’ll want to check out!

The CSLC partners with many different nonprofit organizations in the Grand Rapids area, and 50 of those partners will be attending the fair! This is an incredible opportunity for you to find an organization and meet the people in charge face-to-face, so you can find the right fight for you.

Many students find internships through the CSLC’s resources. Caitlyn Cubberly, a recent graduate of Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies at GVSU, attended the fair numerous times and always left feeling more informed and aware of the needs in our community.

On why she continued to attend, Caitlyn says, “In my free time, I enjoy volunteering! Once I graduate, I hope to obtain my master’s degree and open my own nonprofit to support victims of sex-trafficking … after going to the fair I was able to find out which organizations are specific to women's health and sex-trafficking. I got an internship with HQ, where I helped women and children escape domestic violence.”

After interning with them, she was able to not only gain work experience needed for her major but also a lifetime of appreciation for HQ and Grand Rapids’ fight to end domestic violence and sex-trafficking

Caitlyn says, "We helped make meals and cleaned their facility. We volunteered there because many runaways end up in the trafficking industry, which is my goal to prevent.”

This is just one of many different success stories, and your story could be next! If you are interested in sharing a similar experience, stop by the CSLC in Kirkhof Center 1108 in the Office of Student Life to meet with a Volunteer Coordinator today or visit the CSLC website! The fair is just one day out of the semester, but the CSLC is an ongoing resource to help you find internship and volunteer experiences with our Nonprofit Community Partners.
