Description
PIPES is excited to collaborate with the Milton E. Ford LGBT Resource Center at GVSU & GVSU's Department of Communication Sciences & Disorders as they present a 3-hour virtual training to learners across disciplines. Participants MUST register using the RSVP link BEFORE March 28th at 11:59 pm.
In this interactive training, participants will:
- Gain a better understanding of terminology related to the LGBTQIA+ community
- Understand basic concepts surrounding gender and sexual diversity
- Discuss barriers to care experienced by the LGBTQIA+ community
- Review and practice gender strategies for providing effective and competent health services to LGBTQIA+ patients.
- Apply the four IPEC core competencies (2016) for inclusive practice, dynamic teamwork, and conflict management for LGBTQIA+ patients
Culturally responsive care and population-based health competencies are critical to reducing health disparities among people in the LGBTQIA+ community. In this three-hour workshop, participants will gain a working knowledge of terminology and concepts related to the LGBTQIA+ community, become familiar with health disparities faced by this community, IPEC core competencies for dynamic teamwork, and then review and practice strategies for providing effective and affirming health care to people of all genders and sexual orientations.
The first half of the workshop focuses on basic knowledge of LGBTQIA+ identities and communities. Participants discuss contemporary issues impacting LGBTQIA+ people at the local, state, and national levels before exploring identity terms and related concepts, including distinctions between sex and gender, and gender identity and sexual orientation.
The second half of the workshop focuses on developing participants’ allyship skills and familiarity with leading practices for creating environments that are inclusive of all genders and sexual orientations. Participants will learn basic allyship skills, including considerations around pronoun usage and suggested shifts in language to avoid potential “ouch” words. Finally, participants will apply what they learned and practice problem-solving with scenarios in small and large groups that illustrate the barriers often experienced by gender diverse populations seeking health care services.
*Research component involved. The presenters would like to compare the differences in pre/post-evaluation surveys to measure the impact on training on LGBTQIA+ affirming attitudes and behaviors.
