Irwin receives ATHENA Award

Shelley Irwin, host of The WGVU Morning Show on WGVU radio 88.5 FM/1480 AM, has been selected as the recipient of the 2016 ATHENA Award by the Grand Rapids Area Chamber of Commerce.

Irwin was selected from 10 finalists for the award which honors those who demonstrate leadership in their professional field, mentor and open doors of opportunities for women, and contribute time and talent to the community.

The award is founded on eight ATHENA Tenets: Authentic Self, Relationships, Giving Back, Collaboration, Courageous Acts, Learning, Fierce Advocacy, Celebration and Joy.

"I am so honored to be among the distinguished ATHENA recipients for the 27th year," said Irwin. "It is my plan to uphold the eight Athena Tenets, including Authentic Self and Giving Back, to the best of my abilities."

Irwin is an award-winning public broadcaster, having been honored with five consecutive American Women in Radio and Television Gracie Allen Awards for Outstanding Individual Achievement as Program Host.

She currently serves on eight boards and more than 15 committees dedicated to advancing professional success and enhancing quality of life in West Michigan. She also holds distinction as the first female president for the Grand Rapids Lions Club and the third female president for the University Club of Grand Rapids.

Irwin will be honored September 15 at the annual ATHENA Awards luncheon at the JW Marriott.
