A group of students in the hockey club at Grand Valley were chosen to play on Team USA in the American Collegiate Hockey Association Division II Select Team European Showcase.

Matt Smartt, Scott Tiefenthal and Nick Heinrich participated in six games that took place from December 27-January 6 in Slovakia, Germany, Slovenia, Czech Republic and Croatia. The team had a 5-1 record.

The students were selected after competing in an All-Star Challenge tournament where players from all over the country competed by geographic region.

Team USA was coached by current Grand Valley men’s hockey club coach Mike Forbes. Forbes was chosen by ACHA in 2011 after the Grand Valley men’s hockey team won the ACHA Division II national championship.

“It was a privilege to represent Grand Valley, our league and American hockey,” Forbes said. “Five countries, seven cities and six games made for a trip of a lifetime.”
