Starting this spring/summer, Google's Gmail will be the default student
e-mail system for Grand Valley State University students.
The university has contracted with Google to provide Gmail along with
Google Docs, Calendar and more. The contract provides for privacy for
Grand Valley Gmail accounts and an assurance of no data mining of GVSU information.
Every Grand Valley student will be assigned a Gmail account which will
become the GVSU preferred e-mail. Once the university turns on Gmail for
students, it will no longer accept third-party e-mail accounts for the
preferred e-mail. Students will still be able to forward their Gmail to
a third party account and the university will provide documentation on
how to do this at a later time.
Grand Valley will automatically place the new Gmail account into Banner
and Blackboard as the official e-mail for communication with the
university. The login to Gmail will be the current student <network
ID>@mail.gvsu.edu and the password will be the current student
network password.
Visit www.gvsu.edu/it/gmail
for information on this new service for students. Faculty will receive
information on how to request a Gmail account in the future. GroupWise
will still remain the official means of communication for faculty and
staff.
