ENG 651: VICTORIAN FICTION

In the seminar we will read several major novels from the Victorian Period

(1837-1901) to explore the tradition’s peculiar delights, thematic obsessions,

and enduring legacy. Our reading will be enhanced by the opportunity to screen

at least one or two film adaptations of major Victorian novels.

Vanity Fair, 1848 William Makepeace Thackeray

Bleak House, 1853 Charles Dickens

North & South, 1855 Elizabeth Gaskell [+ Film Adaptation]

Middlemarch, 1872 George Eliot

Tess of the d’Urbervilles, 1891 Thomas Hardy [+ Film Adaptation]
