Admission Requirements 

There are two options for completing the Advanced Content Specialization in Chemistry.  (Please note that each option has unique admission procedures.)

For teachers seeking an M.Ed.

For teachers with an advanced degree seeking additional graduate courses in chemistry

M.Ed. with Advanced Content Specialization - Chemistry

Certificate Program

Requirements for M.Ed. with Advanced Content Specialization-Chemistry

The following are the admission requirements for the M.Ed. program with an Advanced Content Specialization-Chemistry Requirements

  • Michigan teaching certification
  • Undergraduate minor in chemistry or the equivalent*
  • Employment as a high school teacher concurrent with enrollment in CHM 632  

*If you currently do not meet this requirement, see Required Undergraduate Courses.

To apply to the M.Ed. program, prospective students must complete a graduate school application and send the following to Graduate Admissions

       1.        three letters of recommendation
       2.        transcripts of all previous coursework
       3.        copies of teaching certificates 

Prospective students must have a 3.0 or higher GPA on the last 60 credits of undergraduate work taken from a regionally accredited college or university.

After meeting with Doug Busman, you will be referred to Drs. Deborah Herrington and Ellen Yezierski in the Chemistry Department to schedule an interview. 

If you are accepted to Target Inquiry, you will be notified by email and then will be instructed to meet with Doug Busman for College of Education course advising and the development of your planned program.

Certificate Requirements (Chemistry) 

Target Inquiry, independent of the M.Ed. program, is referred to as a certificate program. The certificate program is ideal for teachers who already have an M.Ed. or M.S. and are seeking professional development in chemistry tailored to the needs of high school teachers. Note that the application and admission processes for the certificate program differ from those for the M.Ed.

Admission to the chemistry certificate program requires:

  • Michigan teaching certification
  • Undergraduate minor in chemistry or the equivalent*
  • Employment as a high school teacher concurrent with enrollment in CHM 632   

*If you currently do not meet this requirement, see Required Undergraduate Courses.  Applicants must be admitted to GVSU as a non-degree seeking graduate student and submit the following application materials:

  1. three letters of recommendation
  2. transcripts of all previous coursework
  3. copies of teaching certificates
