Submitting SWS Course Proposals

Supplemental Writing Skills (SWS) courses are proposed to and approved by the University Writing Skills Committee.

Preparing Your SWS Course Proposal

Before beginning your proposal, review the following GVSU SWS documents:

To obtain SWS course approval, the University Writing Skills Committee requires that your proposal include
  1. A course syllabus of record for SWS. Make certain that the course syllabus follows the instructions at How to Construct an SWS Course Syllabus.
  2. A cover letter. A brief letter addressed to the committee requesting SWS approval of the course syllabus.

NOTE: If approved, the submitted course syllabus becomes the SWS syllabus of record and is filed with the Registrar. Thus, the syllabus must stand on its own without the need of further clarification in the cover letter.

Formatting & Submission

Prepare a word processing document in .doc (MS Word) format (do not use .docx) which contains your proposal letter and the SWS course syllabus. Submit the document by email to

Kay Losey
Director of SWS
