The Community Service Learning Center (CSLC) is pleased to announce the Call for Nominations for faculty to serve as Presidential Service Learning Scholars during the 2009-2010 academic year. This special initiative will support up to ten (10) faculty members who incorporate or plan to incorporate service learning practices into course curriculum.

Nominations of faculty by Academic Department Chairs will be submitted on the attached form to the Community Service Learning Center (Attention Michelle Burke, KC 1110) by 4:00 p.m. on October 23rd. Nominations may be delivered by hand, through intercampus mail, or by fax to 331-2355.

Guidelines and Nomination Form (click to download)

Presidential Service Learning Scholars will be announced by President Haas and Provost Davis at a reception on Wednesday, November 11, 3:00 p.m. in the Kirkhof Center 2263.

Selected faculty identified as Presidential Service Learning Scholars will receive:

  • Targeted support from the Office of the Provost and the Community Service Learning Center (faculty orientation, instructional resources, grant development assistance)
  • $1,000 professional development funds to be used in the current fiscal year
  •  Special recognition as a Presidential Service Learning Scholar

Selected Presidential Service Learning Scholars will be faculty who:

  1. Have incorporated service learning into their current curriculum or who are planning to do so within the next year
  2. Want to develop their knowledge base about service learning as a pedagogy (participate in professional development activities such as conferences/seminars, site visits to other campuses, Webinars) during 2009-10
  3. Are willing to serve on the Community Service Learning Center advisory board to develop service learning infrastructure recommendations (i.e. resources, policies and procedures faculty need to engage in service learning) during 2009-10
  4. Commit to mentoring other faculty in 2010-11
  5. Represent a wide range of disciplines throughout the University

Additional Information:

We welcome as many nominations as you care to submit. While all nominations must be endorsed by the Department Chair and Dean, there is no need to narrow your selection.  Faculty of all rank will be considered (tenure-track, visiting, affiliate, adjunct). However, the focus is on faculty who are teaching a full load of courses at the University during 2009-10.

If you have any questions, don't hesitate to contact Michelle Burke (331-2358) or Valerie Jones (331-2345). We look forward to receiving your nominations, and we hope to see you at the announcement event on November 11.

This program is the result of a partnership between the Community Service Learning Center, Pew Faculty Teaching and Learning Center, Center for Scholarly and Creative Excellence, and the Johnson Center for Philanthropy and Nonprofit Leadership. The program is also part of the ABC (Academics Beyond the Classroom) initiative of the Division of Student Services.
