Science: Feryal Alayont and David Clark "How to Chat With Spacecraft"

Session 4, 3 p.m.:

Abstract: Every spacecraft sends and receives communication from NASA containing delicate navigation instructions, coordinates, and photographs. Those signals have to make it through thousands of miles of clouds, static, and radiation that do their best to destroy the signal. Come see how mathematics is used to protect these signals from errors. We'll also enjoy the fruits of these "error-correcting codes": beautiful photos of Saturn and Jupiter sent by probes back to Earth.
