Roger B. Chaffee Scholarship Fund

Established in 1967, the Roger B. Chaffee Scholarship is the nation’s oldest scholarship named in honor of a fallen American astronaut. Each year, a $3,000 college scholarship is awarded to an outstanding high school senior, in the Kent Intermediate School District, who intends to pursue a college career in engineering or the sciences. The scholarship memorializes Navy Lieutenant Commander Roger B. Chaffee. As a bright and enduring legacy, the Roger B. Chaffee Scholarship Fund was established by Roger’s family and friends and in 2017 will award its 50th scholarship as it continues to promote educational excellence throughout Kent County, Michigan. A special poster honoring the 50th anniversary of the scholarship fund will be on display as part of the “Roger That!” photo exhibition. This poster depicts pictures and names of all the past scholarship recipients. For more information on the scholarship please visit
