Science: Brett Bolen "Gravity Waves and Einstein's Legacy"

Session 5, 4 p.m.:

Abstract: In November 1915, Einstein produced his greatest masterpiece:  The Theory of Relativity.  In this theory, he united space and time into one entity and was able to form a theory of gravitation which was even greater than Newton’s theory.  This theory has survived many tests.  But one test remained elusive which was that there should be waves caused by moving masses.  Remarkably almost one century later, these waves have been found by LIGO (Laser Interferometer Gravitational wave Observatory) .  In this talk, we will explore what Einstein’s prediction is and how it will improve our understanding of not only gravity but all of astronomy.
