Field Trips

Local 6th-12th grade school classes are encouraged to attend the 1st annual Roger That! Program held at the Grand Rapids Public Museum (GRPM) in partnership with Grand Valley State University (GVSU) on Friday February 10th, 2017.

Students participating in the program will enjoy the following experiences at the GRPM:

  • A planetarium show including an introductory history of Roger B. Chaffee and a feature presentation highlighting the prospect of human’s future trips to the Moon.
  • Three separate hands-on STEM themed activities provided by the GVSU Padnos College of Engineering
  • Quickfire Design challenge to collaboratively prototype a solution to a problem
  • Robotics demonstrations by the Michigan State University Extension
  • Museum artifacts related to space, space travel, and Roger B. Chaffee
  • A fun and educational “make and take” solar system bracelet (optional)

Programming blocks begin at 9:30 AM and 12:30 PM and last approximately 2.5 hours. Programming will cost $5 per student. For additional details and to schedule your visit contact Tracy Bacigal at the Grand Rapids Public Museum (tbacigal@grpm.org).


Visiting schools also have an opportunity to visit the Roger That! Symposium held at GVSU’s Eberhard Center. Plan your trip around the following activities available to students:

11:00am

  • View real stellar and lunar material from NASA’s travelling education collection
  • View student-submitted design solutions to the Roger That! Design Challenge
  • View a space-inspired art installation from the GVSU collections

12:30pm

  • Watch Roger That! Symposium Keynote Speaker, Brother Guy Consolmagno, Director of the Vatican Observatory and winner of the Carl Sagan Medal for excellence in public communication in the planetary sciences.

1:30pm

  • View real stellar and lunar material from NASA’s travelling education collection
  • View student-submitted design solutions to the Roger That! Design Challenge
  • View a space-inspired art installation from the GVSU collections
