Solar Eclipse

Solar Eclipse

Date and Time

Monday, August 21, 2017 1:00 PM - 4:00 PM

Description

Due to the "unprecedented demand" for eclipse glasses, the company that we ordered from is not able to fulfill our order.  We will not be distributing eclipse glasses.  We apologize for any inconvenience.

Safe ways to view the eclipse are "pinhole projectors".  Instructions can be found at here and here. It is extremely important that no one looks directly at the sun without proper eye protection. Sunglasses will not protect your eyes if you look at the sun.

The RMSC will have pinhole projectors available from 10:00AM – 11:30AM at three locations around campus:

• A table by the Rock near Copeland on North Campus
• Outside of The Connection on South Campus
• At the RMSC’s office in Mackinac C-1-120

In addition, you can watch the  NASA Eclipse live feed in MAK C-1-130 and in the Learning Alcove of the Mary Idema Pew Library from 1PM until 4PM.  If it is overcast out, we recommend viewing the live feed*.

Maximum coverage will occur around 2:20PM. The RMSC staff will be outside the Marketplace 2:00-3:00PM with instruments for public viewing of the eclipse

*This show will cover the path of totality the eclipse will take across the United States, from Oregon to South Carolina. The program will feature views from NASA research aircraft, high-altitude balloons, satellites and specially-modified telescopes. It also will include live reports from Charleston, as well as from Salem, Oregon; Idaho Falls, Idaho; Beatrice, Nebraska; Jefferson City, Missouri; Carbondale, Illinois; Hopkinsville, Kentucky; and Clarksville, Tennessee.

The Grand Valley State University Allendale campus will be able to see about 80% of the eclipse, the first total solar eclipse that can been seen from the U.S. since 1979!  For more information about solar eclipses, read the InterChange April Connections article by GVSU Physics professor, Doug Furton.
