Useful Terminology

Sometimes the terminology used to describe how to log-in to MyBanner or MyBlackboard is confusing. It may be helpful to know the distinctions.

MyBanner - G# and PIN

When you are registering online, checking your schedule or transcripts, reviewing or paying your bill, you will use myBanner. Banner is the student information database, and everything to do with records and registration is here. Once you are an admitted student, please take a few minutes to look through Banner to see what is available to you. You will find a link to myBanner from the GVSU homepage, under Quick Links.

MyBanner requires an assigned G# (think of it as a student number) and PIN for access. (If you are an admitted student and do not know your G# or your PIN, you will find instructions for help on the Banner log-in page.) The department from which to request help with your Banner log-in is Records and Registration. You can phone them at 616-331-3327, or email regdept@gvsu.edu, but note that they will not share personal information via email.

If you are planning to register for online or hybrid online courses, here are some things to consider for each step in the process.
 

Blackboard - Username and Password

Other GVSU resources, such as Blackboard, your gmail, and the library databases will require a username and password. Your assigned username will begin with letters from your surname. Although you will be assigned an initial password, it is recommended that you log-in to myBanner (see above) and select "Personal Information" to change your password to one that you choose and will remember.
