What language is best to combine with a major?

The following majors best combine with a language major: Social work, Nursing, Criminal Justice, Music, Hospitality/Tourism, International Relations, International Business and Business Administration. All of these majors would be greatly enhanced with a foreign language

Which Chinese dialect is taught at GVSU?

The national dialect (Mandarin) is taught in the department. Traditional characters are used in the beginning and simplified (Mainland) characters are introduced later in the first year.

Are Latin and Greek part of the Modern Languages Department curriculum?

No, Latin and Greek are taught in the Classics Department.

When are placement tests given?

Placement tests in French, German and Spanish are given upon request in the Language Lab. Each test is computerized, approximately 20 minutes long and free of charge. Results and suggested placement are given upon completion. No credits are given for these tests, yet students who are placed above the lower levels may take the CLEP credit-by-examination test through the Academic Resource Center.

Can language courses from another institution be transferred to GVSU?

Most courses are transferable. If you do not find your course on the list of transfer equivalencies, then contact your language (section) coordinator from the page. Or, you may call the department office at 331-3203.

Where is the department located?

The department headquarters is located in the new Mackinac Hall addition   (B-2-243 MAK) on the second floor. The building itself is located on the Allendale campus, across the street from the fieldhouse. For a map and driving directions, please see the university's maps page.
