A Story of Latina Excellence: With Marylou Olivarez Mason

Please join us to hear Dr. Marylou Olivarez Mason as we continue to celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month. Dr. Olivarez Mason will be speaking from 12noon - 1 p.m. in the Cook DeWitt Center on GVSU's Allendale Campus. The event is free and open to the public. A reception is scheduled from 1-1:30 p.m.
Dr. Olivarez Mason has successfully battled discrimination as a child migrant, woman, Latina, and single mother. A nationally recognized leader, she founded Michigan's Hispanic Heritage Month, has served with both Democratic and Republican governors, was the first woman to be named executive director of the Michigan Commission on Spanish-Speaking Affairs, founded Advocates for Latino Student Advancement, and became the first Latina to be inducted into Michigan Women's Hall of Fame. In 2000, Dr. Olivarez Mason was named Hispanic Woman of the Year by the National Hispana Leadership Institute in Washington, D.C.
