Frequently Asked Questions
Undergraduate Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing

How do I qualify for direct admission to the Kirkhof College of Nursing?

A limited number of exceptional freshman students are eligible for direct admission to the nursing major.  For those students, admission is based on outstanding academic and leadership performance, including a high school GPA of at least a 3.75 and an ACT composite score of at least a 28.

To continue as a nursing major, a student will be expected to maintain a cumulative minimum 3.0 GPA each semester and a 3.0 GPA on Decision courses, prior to entry into the first clinical course (NUR 315).  None of the Prerequisites or Decision courses may be repeated more than once.

What is the application sequence?

  • Apply to GVSU (may be done on-line)
  • Once accepted at GVSU you will receive a letter of eligibility for direct admission from the dean
  • Following acceptance you need to schedule orientation/registration
  • Meet with a Student Services Coordinator
  • Declare nursing (B.S.N. in Nursing) as your major
  • Enroll in prerequisite courses
  • Meet with nursing faculty advisor to plan progression into the Kirkhof College of Nursing upper division clinical courses (beginning with NUR 315)
  • Meet with faculty advisor by the appropriate application deadline in the semester that prerequisite courses are completed to validate planned entry to clinical courses
