Job Summary

Support Course Materials Department. Provide quality customer service and assist with ordering merchandise and maintaining inventory. Requires willingness to work a flexible schedule with some evening and weekend hours.

Essential Functions

  • Process paperwork: review invoices and credits and approve for payment using Laker Store and university systems.
  • Provide customer service on the sales floor & via telephone and email by responding to customer inquiries and resolving concerns.
  • Place purchase orders with vendors. Monitor receiving status, follow up on any problems, and alert Course Materials Manager of ongoing issues.
  • Maintain stock levels in respective departments/locations:  initiate transfers to & from the Grand Rapids store, oversee access card stock, complete physical inventories and place reorders.
  • Assist with Text Collect adoption approval and make course material purchasing and sell back decisions, using sales history data and enrollment information. Contact faculty & academic departments when necessary.
  • Supervise physical set up of sales floor & shelf tag placement.
  • Schedule & supervise student staff and approve payroll.
  • Receive and price course packs from Copy Center.
  • Manage access card inventory for the Allendale store and support Inclusive Access and other digital initiatives.
  • Possess ability to move books, pallets, and shelving/fixtures as necessary.
  • Other related duties as assigned.

Non-Essential Functions

  • Order office supplies for department.
  • Assist with sell back: buying, cleaning, sorting, tagging and stocking inventory.
  • Assist on the sales floor or cash register as needed at peak times.

Required Qualifications

  • High school graduate or equivalent.
  • Minimum of three years of relevant work experience.
  • Experience with various computer software applications such as Microsoft Office and/or equivalent.
  • Demonstrated experience to successfully operate office equipment.
  • Data entry experience.
  • Typing and spelling competency with grammar and proofreading skills.
  • Possess strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated experience to successfully provide quality customer service.
  • Demonstrated experience to successfully work independently, organize own work and coordinate work activities of others.
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines. 
  • Demonstrated experience to successfully maintain satisfactory work performance and attendance records.
  • Ability to successfully maintain positive intercultural and interpersonal relationships.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Some college course work.
  • Experience in higher education.
  • Experience in a college bookstore or other retail environment.
  • Knowledge of numerous software applications and an aptitude for technology.
  • Knowledge of book publishers and their policies.
  • General knowledge of purchasing policies and procedures.

Supervision Received

Receives general instruction from a designated supervisor but is generally expected to work independently.

Supervision Exercised

Hire, train, supervise, schedule and coordinate the work of student employees and may act as lead worker to other PSS staff members within the department/unit/division.
