Job Summary

Provides quality customer service for bookstore customers through ordering and maintaining inventories for books, merchandise, and software.

Essential Functions

  • Assist customers in locating merchandise, books or software. Respond to customer requests and resolve concerns.
  • Place routine orders with vendors in person and through telephone contacts:  identify source, complete purchase orders, monitor receiving processes, do follow-up, stock inventory, and contact customers as required.
  • Enter and edit information into computerized inventory program.
  • Maintain stock levels in respective departments:  complete physical inventory and place reorders. 
  • Coordinate Holland textbook sales. Verify enrollments and transfer books (Textbooks).
  • Evaluate merchandise salability: do markdowns and order new stock as needed.
  • Process routine paper work. Review invoices and approve for payment.
  • Prepare return forms, markdown sheets and departmental transfers as needed.
  • Other related duties as assigned.

Non-Essential Functions

  • Coordinate marketing efforts for respective department including author appearances, special events and theme months (general reading).
  • Supervise temporary employees during book rush & buy-back (Textbooks).
  • Perform duties associated with bookstore opening and closing and oversee entire bookstore operations on selected evenings and weekends as required by a rotating schedule.

Required Qualifications

  • High school graduate or equivalent.
  • Minimum of two years relevant work experience.
  • Experience with various computer software applications such as Microsoft Office and/or equivalent.
  • Ability to operate office equipment.
  • Data entry experience.
  • Typing and spelling competency.
  • Possess strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to provide quality customer service.
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to maintain satisfactory work performance and attendance records.
  • Ability to successfully maintain positive intercultural and interpersonal relationships.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Some college course work.
  • Experience in higher education.
  • Experience in a trade bookstore and familiarity with both classic and contemporary books and authors (general reading).
  • Knowledge of numerous software applications and an aptitude for technology. (Electronics).
  • Knowledge of book publishers and their policies (general reading).
  • General knowledge of purchasing policies and procedures.

Supervision Received

Receives supervision and work assignments from a designated supervisor, although other staff members in the unit may provide work direction.

Supervision Exercised

May be responsible for the coordination of work assignments for student employees.
