A Letter from the Interfraternity Council President

Fraternity Presidents Winter 2010

Dear Grand Valley Student,

Thank you for taking the time to visit the official webpage for the Grand Valley State University Interfraternity Council. I would like to say that it is an extreme pleasure to represent over four-hundred men within seven national chapters and two national colonies from around the country that have been established on this fine campus.

In half a century, Grand Valley has grown into a premiere university to attend in the Midwest.  It is with tremendous pride I can say that in forty of those years we have one of the best Greek systems around. Each chapter and colony gives their members and potential members the opportunities to grow as leaders, friends, brothers, and as people; and without Greek life I do not know where I would be today as any of those.

As an independent council, we thrive off of our own fraternity men to develop and construct how our community will operate on a daily basis. Though I might be one man within this large group of men who has to make a decision or two, I look to those within my community to truly help guide where we will stand in the future.

I understand that there is a stigma that surrounds Greek life and that there are movies that portray what Greek life is believed to be, but I am proud to say that here at Grand Valley State University, that stigma is broken. Our fraternity men spend countless hours raising money or donating their time to help build houses or beautify our towns. Our men spend more hours mentoring those whom are younger than them to help develop good study habits and foster essential friendships for life.

I encourage anyone who is not Greek to search their options within any one of our nine fraternities. We have grown at a rapid rate over the last two years and it couldn’t have been done without those who are willing to step up and change their life by joining a fraternity and becoming a leader on our campus. I am not saying that once you join a fraternity and pay your dues that you will become a leader. It is what you do after that. You will get whatever you want out of a fraternity as long as you put equal or more into it.

If you have any questions, please feel free and contact me at the email provided below and I will be happy to chat with you. If you are interested in joining a fraternity or just want general information, please visit any one of the fraternity’s webpage’s, which can be found under the “Our Fraternity Community” tab.

Interfraternally,

Shawn Driggers
