Fieldhouse
The GVSU Fieldhouse/Recreation Center is a prominent multi-purpose facility in West Michigan. In 1984, the Fieldhouse received the “Facility of Merit” award from Athletic Business magazine. In 1997, the Recreation Center addition was honored by American School and Universities Magazine, as a “Gold Citation–Interior Awards” winner. Leading design and construction firms throughout West Michigan have collaborated to create the overall facility.
The Fieldhouse/Recreation Center is a site for performance excellence. The center is the home of the 2002, 2003, 2005 and 2006 National Championship GVSU Laker Football team, as well as the 2005 Women's Volleyball National Championship team and the 2006 Women's Basketball National Championship team. Other competitive GVSU athletic teams have risen to the top of NCAA Division II competition year in and year out. Many of GVSU’s athletes are recognized for academic achievements, as well. In recent years, GVSU has won the NCAA All Sports Trophy, which is the measure of total program excellence in NCAA Division II.
Some of the unique features of this facility that you are not likely to find in any other West Michigan facilities, are: A state-of-the-art Fitness Center, a 1/9th of a mile elevated track, recreational courts, instructional swimming facilities, an indoor Climbing Wall, lobbies with large screen televisions, and a multi-purpose competition arena.
Pool
The GVSU pool is designed for recreational swimming, special events, and competitive collegiate swimming. The pool is 25 yards x 25 meters long and and contains 6 lanes for lap swimming, which are typically available 7 days a week.
Rec Center
With considerably more attention placed upon fitness in the 1990's, and explosive enrollment growth, Grand Valley State University officials desired to expand recreational services. The result was an interior showcase "gold citation through American School and University Magazine".
Recent additions to the facility included a recreational gymnasium with wood flooring, an elevated track for jogging and walking, and extensive cardiovascular and selectorized areas. The most recent addition occurred in 2002 and included a third enclosed gymnasium, and extensive cardiovascular space and equipment, a weight lifting center and a spinning/rowing room.
The Recreation Center Design team sought an environment to "see and be seen". Large glass facades promote the feeling of openness allowing participants indoors an exceptional view of campus. This is a feature that differentiates this facility from most of its type. The windows actually "bring the outdoors, indoors".
The 1/9th of a mile cantilevered running track is elevated high off the two main floors. Features of this area include windows and interesting site lines, four lanes on the track and stretching areas. The main fitness center now features over 60 pieces of modern cardiovascular Precor equipment.
On the lower fitness center level, new selectorized weight equipment by Magnum is offered. The new Weight Lifting Center offers a training facility for more serious power lifters.
The South Gymnasium is primarily used as a teaching facility for academic classes. In addition, the space is used for recreational sports, intercollegiate athletics, and other uses.
